Annotide vs Label Studio
Label Studio (HumanSignal) is a broad, plugin-friendly open-source annotation tool with one of the widest ranges of supported data types in the space. People searching for a “Label Studio alternative” or “self-hosted Label Studio” are usually weighing its breadth against a simpler licence/pricing story, or looking for stronger built-in quality control. This page compares the two directly.

Where media lives
Section titled “Where media lives”Self-hosted Label Studio Community keeps media on your own infrastructure — the same starting point as Annotide. The difference is in the paid tiers: Starter Cloud and HumanSignal’s Enterprise SaaS option store data on HumanSignal’s infrastructure, while Label Studio Enterprise can alternatively be self-managed on your own Kubernetes cluster (their docs cover deploying Enterprise via Helm). Annotide only ever has the self-hosted shape — there is no cloud-hosted edition to choose instead.
Pricing shape
Section titled “Pricing shape”Label Studio Community is free and open source, with the full labeling toolset. HumanSignal’s paid tiers are Starter Cloud (around $50/month, hosted) and Enterprise (custom, per-seat pricing, typically sold on contract), which add SSO, RBAC, audit-oriented features and SOC 2-backed hosting.
Annotide’s Community edition is free for up to three users with every annotation feature and the model gateway. Team is €12/user/month (or €29/month for a team of 5 plus €12 per extra user). Business, €20/user/month with self-serve checkout and a 30-day trial, adds SSO, SCIM, folder permissions, full audit history and consensus QA — the features Label Studio sells through Enterprise contracts. Enterprise (€18/user/month billed yearly, from €3,000/year) adds annual invoicing, volume pricing, offline keys and custom contract terms.
Licensing
Section titled “Licensing”Label Studio’s open-source core is Apache 2.0 — permissive, no commercial-use restriction, patent grant included. Its Enterprise edition is proprietary and separately licensed. Annotide is source-available under the Elastic License 2.0: free to use, commercially too, up to three users without a key; it may not be offered as a hosted service or have its licence key circumvented. If an OSI-approved open-source licence is a hard requirement, Label Studio’s Apache 2.0 core is the more permissive option.
When to choose Label Studio instead
Section titled “When to choose Label Studio instead”- You need the breadth of its plugin/template ecosystem and its large open-source community — Label Studio has one of the most flexible “labeling config” systems for unusual or mixed data types.
- You want the option to run Enterprise either self-managed or fully hosted by the vendor, and to switch between those without changing tools.
- Your licence preference is Apache 2.0, or you need more than three users on the free, self-hosted edition.
When Annotide fits better
Section titled “When Annotide fits better”- You want SSO, audit history and consensus QA at a published per-seat price you can buy and trial yourself, not through an Enterprise contract.
- You want simple per-seat prices with no separate hosted-vs-self-managed decision to make, from an EU vendor, with no licence check that depends on reaching a vendor service.
- You want LLM evaluation (ranking, scoring, conversations) alongside image/video/text annotation, with distillation/quantization lineage and an MCP server for AI coding agents, as part of the same product.
